Biographical / Historical
Dr. Rosalind Cassidy (1895-1980) was born in Quincy, Illinois. She was an author and professor in the field of physical education and a tireless advocate for and influence on physical education pedagogy. Though it never occurred during her career, she regularly wrote and spoke in favor of changing the name of the body of knowledge of physical education to kinesiology as she believed movement education was about more than physicality. Dr. Cassidy's first book was published in 1927 and she continued to publish throughout her career, eventually publishing more than a dozen books and numerous articles and other publications.
Cassidy earned a B.S. degree from Mills College in 1918, M.A. degree in 1924, and an Ed.D. in 1937, both from Columbia University. She also earned an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Mills College. Dr. Cassidy taught at Mills College 1918 to 1949 while also holding various other positions, such as department chair. After her time at Mills College, she taught at UCLA until 1962, though she remained very active in the profession as a guest professor, speaker, researcher, and author following her retirement.
