Scope and Contents

The collection documents the activities of the Tar Heel Garden Club and includes scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, award submissions, awards, yearbooks, and photographs. The scrapbooks range from 1953 to 2010, and include photographs, yearbooks, event programs, letters, and newspaper clippings. The newspaper clippings within the collection range from 1965 to 1983. The awards date from 2003-2008. There are also records of submissions for specific awards; these range from 1993 to 2007. The yearbooks include lists of officers and committee members, and meeting locations, programs, and hostesses. These records date from 1956 to 1995. Miscellaneous photographs date from 1973 to 1984.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Sedgefield Garden Club was established in Sedgefield, North Carolina on April 21, 1953, for the purpose of expanding knowledge of gardening and flower arrangement. Membership is by invitation only. When the club was originally founded, membership was limited to fifteen members; the current membership cap is twenty. The organization meets monthly from September to May to plan activities and hold lectures or lessons on gardening, flower arrangement, or wildlife.

Throughout the years, the Sedgefield Garden Club has contributed to and participated in various events and causes, namely those put on and organized by the Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs. Most notable is the work the club has done for the residents of the Mayfield Nursing Home, which has been their yearly garden therapy project since 1994. They have won several garden therapy awards for their work. Additionally, the club has been sponsoring a youth garden club since 2008. The Sedgefield Garden Club continues to meet on a regular basis.
