Biographical / Historical

Rosie Grosshans Noel (b. 1967) of Warren, Michigan served in aviation electronics of the Marine Corps from 1988 to 2009. Rosie Grosshans Noel was born in 1967 in Warren, Michigan, and grew up in Michigan. After graduating from high school in 1985, she went to Northern Michigan University.

Upon graduation, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1988. Noel attended basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. She was then sent to Millington, Tennessee for training from August of 1988 to February of 1989. Her next training, in specialized aviation, was in Lemoore, California. Her first duty station was at Parris Island, where she worked as an aviation electrician. While there, she received training in micro-miniature repair, which led to a Military Occupational Specialty conversion from aviation electrician to micro-miniature repair technician. Noel remained at Parris Island from 1989 to 1996, and married a fellow Marine. Noel then went to Pensacola, Florida in 1996, as an instructor in aviation electronics.

She then returned to Parris Island for drill instructor duty from 1999 to 2001. Her next duty station was Beaufort Air Station to be co-located with her husband. She was then assigned to Japan for ten months in 2004, then returned to Beaufort Air Station, at which time she and her husband divorced. Noel requested to be assigned to a forward unit deploying to Iraq, Marine Aircraft Wing 26, which arrived in Iraq in February 2005 for a year-long deployment at Al Asad Airbase.

On August 27th, 2005, approximately halfway through that deployment, Noel was wounded by shrapnel from indirect mortar fire. She received medical care at Al Asad, and was airlifted to Balad Air Base. Though she was going to be moved to Landstuhl, Germany and then Bethesda, Maryland, she requested to return to Al Asad and did so, returning on the 28th of August and remaining to complete her deployment.

After her deployment to Iraq, Noel returned to the United States and served until 2009, when she retired with the rank of master gunnery sergeant. As of 2011, she worked for the Second Marine Division Association as a civilian.
