Biographical / Historical

Adeline Ledesma Horner Teague (1924-2008) of California served in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) at the end of WWII. Adeline Teague was born in San Diego, California, in 1924, to Mexican migrant farmworkers. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1941 and attended Los Angeles City College while working at the Wholesale Terminal Market.

After college, she went to work for Pan American World Airways. Teague enlisted in the WAVES in June 1945, on her twenty-first birthday, and was sent to Hunter College, New York, for boot camp. She was then assigned to the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, where she worked in the personnel office. Following her discharge, Teague returned to work at the produce market in LA. After the death of her first husband, Teague moved to North Carolina and earned a degree from Elon College in 1950.

She then returned to California to teach and eventually received her masters degree from Claremont. Teague also taught at California State University at Fullerton. She was widowed three times and had three children. She settled in Erect, North Carolina, and died in 2008.
