The Margaret McConnell Holt Papers date from 1962 to 1984 and contain manuscripts, paste-ups, galley proofs and layouts of the booklet, Chinqua-Penn Plantation; some drawings and illustrations; correspondence; and copies of a typewritten transcript of recorded conversations.

Correspondence in this collection dates from November 1967 to June 1968. Much of the correspondence is between Margaret M. Holt and George W. Hamer, who was director of development at UNCG. There is also a large amount of correspondence between Holt and A.W. Kelley, assistant manager of the North Carolina State University printing office.

Kelley and Hamer communicated with Holt regarding the illustrations, format, layout, and printing of Chinqua-Penn Plantation. Holt enclosed some preliminary material for her book with her correspondence, including the plans for text and illustration arrangement, as well as a list of art objects for the book.

Typewritten transcripts of recorded conversations between Mrs. Beatrice Penn and Dean Mereb Mossman of UNCG are included in this collection. The conversations occurred in August 1962 and concern the building and furnishing of Chinqua-Penn, the acquisition of art objects from around the world, anecdotes about Mr. Thomas Jefferson Penn, and incidents of their lives on the estate. Quotations from them are used throughout the booklet.

A loose-leaf notebook containing the joint suggestions of Paul A. Schoellkopf and Elmore Willets, nephews of Mr. and Mrs. Penn, about the final published version of the book is also included.
